History of Berrima
The Berrima area was first lived in by the Dharawal Aboriginal people.
European exploration of the area started in the late 1790s. A significant expedition in 1798 was led by John Wilson, who was formerly a convict. The region was rediscovered in 1814 by John and Hamilton Hume. In 1818, Charles Throsby explored more of the area. Soon after, settlers began to establish land runs, including one led by Throsby himself.
Harper’s Mansion is an important old house that looks over the town. It was built between 1829 and 1830. At first, Bong Bong was planned to be a main settlement in the county. But because it could easily flood, New South Wales surveyor-general Thomas Mitchell chose Berrima instead. Berrima is on the main road from Sydney to Goulburn. It was meant to be the center for government and the economy in southern New South Wales. The town was officially surveyed in 1830, and its layout got approval in 1831. People hoped Berrima would grow into a place for business and industry, especially for wool and leather.
Many important buildings were made in the early years. The courthouse was built from 1833 to 1838. The gaol, made with the help of convict labor, was finished in 1839. The Surveyor General Inn, built in 1834, has had a liquor license since 1839. This makes it one of the oldest hotels in Australia.
In the 1840s, Berrima was a busy place because it was along the Old Hume Highway. There were fourteen hotels in and around the town. Then, the railway came but did not go through Berrima. This caused the population to drop quickly. For a hundred years, no new homes were built. In 1896, Henry Parkes, the Premier of New South Wales, planted an oak tree near the post office.
Today, Berrima is famous for its old buildings that are well kept. The whole village is on the Register of the National Estate. Some important sites are the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, created by Edmund Blacket and finished in 1849. Another one is St Francis Xavier Catholic Church. It was made between 1849 and 1851 by the well-known British Gothic Revival architect Augustus Pugin.
In 1963, the Berrima Village Trust was created to protect the old buildings in the town. In March 1989, a new part of the Hume Highway was built, which went around Berrima. This change reduced the amount of traffic passing through, helping to keep the town’s historic feel.
